The Disaster Stories...

I guess I've been watching too much TV lately because between Dr. Phil and Everybody Loves Raymond reruns, I've been thinking about wedding disasters. On a recent episode of Dr. Phil, they had a wedding where a deck fell off the side of a house where a reception was being held, taking the wedding party and half the guests down and into a pool (people were hurt; it was pretty awful). Apparently there were so many of them, Dr. Phil even has a page with advice on how to get over your wedding disaster.

Another wedding was ruined by storms, still others had drunk grooms. And then there's that classic Raymond episode where he tapes over the wedding video, and he and Debra have to recreate their wedding (which he also ruins ;-).

Thankfully, I didn't have any wedding disasters, though I have known people who have had things go wrong (forgetting rings, stains at the last minute). The Wedding Channel has a whole list of "what to do" if things go wrong at the last minute.

One of the funniest things-go-wrong videos I came across in writing this blog was this one.

I figure no matter what I wish I could have done over at my wedding, at least my mistakes aren't on You Tube ;-)

Our disaster wasn't of our making...it was all mother nature! Washington DC in late summer, 110 degrees, 100% humidity, NO airconditioning. The ushers tuxes were soaked and you could tell from the pictures we all looked like we were in a sauna. The worst part was that I was to have a family friend's orchids in my bouquet but the power went off in his greenhouse and they fried the night before. The orchids were "borrowed" from a very special garden in that area but I have to take the where to my grave!

Disasters are horrible the day of but if you live right, the stories are wonderful forever! Who needs boring!

Peace, Julie

Oh Julie! What awful heat to deal with -- and NO air conditioning! I have to admit, having had central air conditioning for the last twelve years or so, I can't imagine how I ever lived without it in all my other houses. Our first house had just a fan and the one A/C unit in the bedroom, and it was SO hot in the summer. When I was growing up, we never had A/C.

LOL about that video, too. I watch all the ones on AFHV, too. And say thank goodness that's not me, LOL.

Julie, I can't imagine what went through your mind when you heard about the orchids frying!

And Shirley, that video nearly made my eyes pop out of my head (and wouldn't that have been a great video)? LOL

I've seen a few others online that have made me cringe. The photographer who asks the groom to pick up the bride while they're standing next to a swimming pool comes to mind. And yes, he loses his balance and they both fall in. What do you do when the dress of your dreams (and your hair) are totally waterlogged?

LOL, Myrna. That must be a HILARIOUS video!! I'd be crushed if that happened to me -- and be asking for a do-over of my wedding ;-)

Although this doesn't qualify as a full-blown disaster, I went to two weddings this summer and someone's cell phone rang in the middle of each of the two ceremonies. The people involved took a long time scrambling to find the phone, too. It was a whole lotta ringing going on.
