Wedding Odds and Ends

How old were you when you got married (or how old would you like to be)? In the year 2000, the average age for a bride was 24 and the average age for a groom was 24.

Most brides have 4 bridesmaids, including the maid of honor.

There was a wedding dress made in Germany that had a train that was 515 feet long.

During Princess Victoria's wedding processional in 1858, Wagner's Bridal Chorus was played, establishing a tradition which has lasted.

Every year in the United States an average of 17 tons of gold is made into wedding rings.

If you're into luxury items, you might be interested in a wedding dress created by designer Helene Gainville. It's embroidered with diamonds mounted on platinum and estimated to be worth 3.5 million pounds.

And last of all, an interesting reason for a tradition. In days gone by, after the bridegroom captured his bride, he placed her on his left to protect her, freeing his right hand (his sword hand) in case of attack.

I was 19 when I got married between my sophomore and junior year in college. And have now been married almost 28 years. Got straight As my last two years in school besides, in microbiology no less!

People are shocked when they find out because most of my friends still waited until their late 20s or thirty to tie the knot. Had my kids early too.

The only regret that I have is that my wedding was more my mother's idea of what the wedding should be due to my age and the fact that my folks really didn't want me getting married!!!

But she did the flowers as a speciality florist and they were gorgeous, so it was a trade off. And they both realized eventually that their son-in-law wasn't just a big bad senior stealing their freshman daughter away :-)

My poor children though. When they hadn't found their true loves by 19,they started to panic. But life is good now for both of them for having waited a bit.

Peace, Julie

Julie, I am very impressed with anyone who can keep an "A" average while studying micro. Man, that's a tough course.

Myrna, I love the very last paragraph. It's so romantic to think of that swordsman protecting his bride with his sword. Now that's chivalry!

I was 18 when I married and we were told we were too young and that getting married so young meant our marriage woulnd't last. HA! We've been married for 15 years and still "going strong", still very much in love.

Love the wedding factoids! Very interesting. *G*
