A Romantic Wedding for a Romance Editor...
When I was asked to write this blog, I was at first very excited. I love nothing more than talking about my wedding, but having to put into words what was so special is actually quite a hard task! So, like all good stories let’s start at the beginning…
On a deserted beach in Florida, my boyfriend of seven years, David, finally popped the question! (British men can be a little slow sometimes…) Wow! Finally it was my chance to plan the most amazing day of my life…sorry our life. I knew I wanted big and I knew I wanted traditional, but like every modern bride I also had a budget!
Being a romance editor did not make this task any easier! Every day is spent with gorgeous heroes who sweep their beautiful women off to exotic locations and where money is no object…it can spoil a girl! We scoured places in England and although very beautiful none really did it for us – we also knew that it would rain.
So my hero and I decided to have our wedding on the beautiful Mediterranean island of Cyprus. There were a numbers of reasons for this, but the main one was that the sun was guaranteed to shine...
It took twelve months to plan, and I even had my very own wedding planner who organised everything exactly as I wanted it – even down to goldfish swimming around in bowls at our table!
The big day arrived and on THE HOTTEST DAY OF THE YEAR my dad and I were escorted in a horse drawn carriage to the 2000 year old monastery where David and I would tie the knot. There were shouts and cheers of good luck from all the passers-by as we trundled along. I have never felt so nervous or excited in all my life!
We arrived at the monastery and with a little help I managed to make my way over the ancient cobbled courtyard in my four inch heels…I didn’t think that through did I? Then the doors opened and I charged down the aisle to the man of my dreams…I had been waiting seven years remember!! Our vows were exchanged in front of our very closest family and friends and I even promised to love, honour and OBEY!!! In return my beloved David swore to worship me. I thought this meant diamonds every month, but he assures me it doesn’t…
After hundreds of photos we made our way back to the hotel for champagne, speeches and dancing as the warm sun set on our first day as man and wife. It was simply the most perfect day in the most perfect setting and definitely as good as any romance I’ve read!
Looking back, it was quite an international affair I suppose, England, America and Cyprus. For our honeymoon we went to Egypt, and we bought back a little souvenir…our first baby! We have been married now for four years and have two babies and are still very much in love. If only you could get married every year…to the same man of course! I adore wedding stories and yours sounds just perfect, Emily. Loved this line: "In return my beloved David swore to worship me." Happy sigh.

I resonated with your "hottest day of the year" comment. We were married on a day with 110 degree and 100% humidity. And somehow, in spite of the drooping curls and sweat stained tuxes, it was perfect!
Nice to know that even people who deal in romantic fantasy every day can find real romance.
Thanks for sharing....you have a great sense of humor too!
Peace, Julie

Thanks Julie!
we were warned it would be hot, but i don't think even we realised how hot it would be! That first glass of champagne was just amazing - ice cold!
working in romance is fun, but has its downside too...my husband has a lot to live up too!! ;)

Hi Emily, You've been living your own Mills & Boon with that romantic proposal and then the fairytale wedding in Cyprus. Here comes the personal question. And do you obey? I did enjoy your wedding story. Thank you for sharing it.

Emily, you sure did have the international affair didn't you? And I can't believe you managed not to slip with the cobbled stones. Having been to Greece, I know they can be slippery suckers. It was hard enough in sneakers! LOL!
You both look stunning despite being the hottest day of the year. And as for the vows. A friend of mine in her ceromony, stamped her husband's foot at the mention of OBEY.... *g*

Hi Jacqueline,
I like to think that we have a very equal relationship, so decisions are generally made between us. However, there have been a couple of times when I have left the decision to David...then I can always blame him if things go wrong!! Is that mean of me?

Hi Eleni,
the cobbled stones were tricky, but mainly due to my high heels!! i have a great photo of my dad helping me over them - it's one of my favourites!
I'd warned everyone that I was going to be obeying, and as I said it in church there was a distinct giggling amongst my family and friends...

Glad you didn't slip and get bloody knees. Dad to the rescue! *g*
It's great when there are giggles during the ceremony Emily. Being Greek Orthodox I was the koumbara (best woman) at my cousin's wedding. In the service I had to exchange the crowns three times. Well, I'm Ms Shorty and so they had to duck. LOL! The whole church errupted in laughter!

Oh, those photos are gorgeous! And, like everyone else, I love the line about him worshiping you... must see if I can slip that into my own vows. :)

Hi,
although i would love to claim the worship line was actually of my own creation, these are actually the traditional vows said at a wedding. These days most people opt out of saying these, especially the obey bit, and go for something a little more modern. However, I'm a traditional girl and and think that a little bit of worshipping has got to be a good thing...
